Ağız: Ağızda tükürük bezleri tarafından salgılanan tükürük sıvısı içinde bulunan enzimler karbonhid­ratların kimyasal sindirimini başlatır.

Karaciğer ve pankreas, sindirim sistemi organlarından değildir. Ancak bu organlar salgıları ile sindiri­me yardımcı olur. Bu organlardan karaciğer, karın boşluğunun sağ üst köşesinde yer alır. Ürettiği safra sıvısını alt yüzeyinde bulunan safra kesesine gönderir. Safra sıvısı buradan ince bağırsağa aktarılır. Pankreas ise karın boşluğunun sol üst köşesinde midenin altında bulunur. Karbonhidrat, protein ve yağların kimyasal sindirimini sağlayan enzimleri bulunduran pankreas öz suyunu salgılar. Pankreas öz suyu, ince bağırsakta kimyasal sindirimi sağlar.
Besinlerin Kana Geçişi
Besinlerin kana geçebilmesi için ilk önce sindirilmesi gerekir. Bunun için de besinler fiziksel ve kim­yasal sindirime uğrayarak hücrelerden geçebilecek kadar küçük parçalara ayrılır.
Karbonhidratlar, proteinler ve yağlar; sindirim ile küçük parçalara ayrılırken vitaminler, mineraller ve su; hücre zarından geçebilecek kadar küçük parçalardan oluşur. Besinlerin kana geçişi, sindirimin tamamlandığı ince bağırsakta gerçekleşir. Bu olaya emilim adının verildiğini daha önce öğrenmiştik. Be­sinlerin ince bağırsakta emiliminin gerçekleşmesinden sonra geriye kalan besin artıkları kalın bağırsağa geçer.


Besin artıkları içindeki su, mineraller ve vitaminlerin bir kısmının emilimi kalın bağırsakta gerçekleşir. Besin maddelerinin kullanılmayan kısmı ise anüs yoluyla vücut dışına atılır.
     Sindirim sisteminin başlangıç noktası olan ağızda bulunan dişler temizlenmediklerinde mikropların çoğalmasına uygun bir ortam oluştururlar. Bu nedenle yemeklerden sonra dişler fırçalanmalıdır.
